Blithfield & Company Fabric and Wallpaper Design House

Articles

Blithfield & Company is a boutique fabric and wallpaper design house founded in 1997 by Americans Anne Dubbs and Liz Downing. It produces a collection of designs inspired by 18th and 19th century English documents. Being a boutique company means that Blithfield fabrics are exceptionally made, screen printed in England on fine Belgian linen and 100% silk.

It has always been Dubbs and Downings ambition to produce textiles that can be used for contemporary and traditional interiors. Blithfield's ethos is to create fabric and wallpapers that compliment these two very different interiors. Blithfield is most famous for its Peggy Angus Collection, which features a lovely range of fabrics and wide width wallpapers, based on original hand blocked designs which are available in a wide range of colours.

Peggy Angus, who was born in 1904, won a scholarship to the London College of Art which is where she learnt her trade and discovered her passion. Originally a painter, Angus actually gained fame through her crafts, designing tiles and creating hand-printed wallpaper from carved linoleum blocks. Determined not to betray her original love, Angus painted John Piper and the Ramsay MacDonald family which now hang in London’s National Portrait Gallery.

Angus, a formidable woman, later in life turned to teaching. She would encourage her students to improve their environments by daubing the walls of the school building.

Blithfield’s collections include traditional florals, such as Parnham and Marlow, coordinate with the Contemporary Classic Collection, Colebrook, Griffin, Ikat, Pelham and Pomeroy.

Blithfield has always been a favourite fabricsandpapers.com, with Emma frequently using their fabrics and wallpapers for her interior design projects.

Our most successful designs are; Beasties linen, Oakleaves linen, Small Damask Wallpaper and Wicklewood fabric.
