No longer are designers tied to boundaries of repetitive wallpaper design. There are wallpapers on the market today, that are more closely associated with hand-painted papers or mural decoration than traditional wallpaper printing. The overall effect has a different rhythm. The design seems to be ever-changing rather than always repeating around the room.
Wonderful effects can be achieved by wallpapers designed to reflect and refract the light as it hits the surface of the wall. Modern metallic wallcoverings give different levels of light reflection. Many designs contrast shiny areas with others giving a soft glow on a matt ground, thus giving depth to the design.
Thanks to some sophisticated manufacturing techniques, we are currently seeing all sorts of textured and fabric-like effects, among others also flock and suede.
Many wallpaper designs in current production also draw on traditional patterns and motifs so that although they are contemporary in one sense, they still rely on the past. The popular damask patterns, Regency stripes, flower motifs, trelliswork and arabesques available, are replicas of old wallpapers seen in historical houses often re-coloured in contemporary colours and re-printed in a much larger or smaller scale.
The cutting edge of contemporary interior design is represented at Fabrics&Papers by wallpaper and textile designers such as Neisha Crosland, Georgia Horton, Barneby Gates, Vivienne Westwood and Cole&Son.
