How to Dress Your Bed Like an Interior Stylist

27 Sep 2024

Dressing your bed like an interior stylist involves a combination of layering, texture, colour co-ordination and attention to detail. We have collated some beautiful examples and included our expert tips on achieving that luxurious, professionally styled look. Starting from the top...

Go Bold With Your Headboard

A statement headboard is an ideal canvas to showcase your favourite fabric design. Whether you prefer large-scale printed motifs, embellished embroideries, textured plains or geometric small designs, the beauty of a headboard lies in its versatility, and nearly all fabrics can be considered for upholstery.

Often the main focal point of the room, the colours featured on your headboard can guide the rest of your décor. By selecting colours from the headboard fabric for your curtains and walls, you can create a smart and cohesive style throughout the space.

In our view, a headboard should almost be considered a work of art within your scheme and is certainly a great place to start when dressing your bed. Whether you're looking for a ready-made design or something completely bespoke, we can help you create a headboard that commands centre stage.

Never Underestimate Cushions

Decorative cushions not only provide comfortable head support while you unwind with a good book, but they also offer an excellent opportunity to experiment with contrast, pattern and texture, instantly transforming your bedroom. By thoughtfully layering scatter cushions in front of your pillows and headboard, you can create a structured, visually appealing arrangement that enhances symmetry and balance.

Combine solid colours, bold patterns, and a variety of textures to add depth and character. For example, pairing a plush, velvet cushion with a striking patterned one creates a captivating focal point. To complete the look, consider adding a lumbar pillow positioned centrally at the front for extra dimension.

For a more relaxed, organic feel, opt for an odd number of cushions and slightly offset one of the accent pillows to break up symmetry and add a touch of spontaneity.

Our bespoke cushion service offers a wide range of shapes, sizes and finishes, allowing you to customize the perfect cushions to complement your bed. Reach out with your project details and we'll help you create a truly personalised look.

Layering Bedspreads and Blankets

By thoughtfully arranging throws and bedspreads, you can create a designer-inspired bed that looks inviting, stylish and expertly curated. Begin by laying your bedspread or quilt smoothly across the bed, ensuring it reaches evenly to the sides and foot of the bed. This forms the base layer to your bedding. Next, layer a decorative blanket (depending on the season) over the bedspread, but fold it back two-thirds down the bed. This creates a layered effect, adding depth and texture.

Finally, add a throw for texture and warmth. Draped casually across the foot of the bed or diagonally from the bottom corner, a throw will add a touch of warmth and cosiness. Alternatively, you can neatly fold the throw into thirds and place it horizontally across the foot of the bed. This option gives a more structured and polished look.

When choosing your bedspreads and throws, we would encourage you to consider texture, colour and material. For example, mix and match a chunky knit throw with a smooth silk or velvet bedspread to see how this contrast enhances the tactile appeal of your bed. Also use them as an opportunity to introduce a bold colour into your scheme, especially if the rest of the bedding is neutral. Finally, don’t be afraid to mix patterns, such as a floral throw with a striped bedspread. As long as the colours complement each other, it is a great way to add more into your bedroom scheme.

Ottomans & Stools

Placing ottomans or stools at the foot of a bed is a stylish and functional way to enhance your bedroom's design. Opting for ottomans with hidden storage is a practical choice, offering a convenient spot to keep extra blankets, pillows or magazines neatly tucked away. These pieces can also serve as additional seating, perfect for putting on shoes or simply relaxing.

When selecting an ottoman or footstool, it's important to choose one that is proportionate to the size of your bed. For a king or queen bed, a long ottoman or bench works well, while a smaller ottoman or a pair of compact stools is ideal for twin beds. Ensure the height of the ottomans or stools is slightly lower than the mattress to maintain a smooth visual flow and prevent the pieces from overwhelming the space.

Upholstered designs introduce a soft, luxurious feel, while wooden or metal stools add texture and contrast. When choosing an upholstery fabric and trimmings, opt for colours that either match the bedspread or complement other elements in the room, such as the walls, lampshades or other upholstered pieces. This thoughtful co-ordination creates a cohesive and inviting bedroom aesthetic.

Valances

Adding a valance to your bed is an easy yet impactful way to elevate the look of your bedroom. A valance or bed skirt can conceal any under-bed storage and bed frame, providing a clean and polished appearance. It also adds a layer of softness and texture, contributing to the overall aesthetic of the room. Whether you opt for a tailored kick-pleat or box-pleat design for a more structured and elegant look, or a ruffled style for a cosy cottagey feel, a valance can tie together your bedding, creating a well-dressed bed.

If you have the height to work with, co-ordinating your valance with a bed canopy can elevate the grandeur of your bed. Whether you use the same patterned fabric or a complementary plain, this combination creates a cohesive and luxurious look. For an added layer of elegance, consider matching your valance fabric to your wallpaper to create a seamless design that ties the entire room together.

Lampshades and Lighting

Adding lighting to dress your bed will enhance the ambiance and functionality of your bedroom. By incorporating bedside table lamps or a couple of wall sconces or swing-arm lights, you can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that highlights the bed as the room's focal point. Soft, dimmable lights can set the mood for relaxation, while adjustable reading lights provide practical illumination without disturbing the overall aesthetic of the room.

For a touch of drama, consider adding a statement lampshade to your lighting. A bold, patterned design can introduce additional colour and texture to your scheme that can complement or contrast with your bedding. Alternatively, a uniquely shaped or oversized lampshade can become a focal point, drawing attention to the bedside area. Our bespoke lampshades can be made in any fabric of your choice, offers a wonderful way to express your individual style, and will make your bedroom feel truly personalised.
