F&P Interiors 25-year anniversary with GP & J Baker on making history

Proud holders of a Royal Warrant for more than four decades, the exquisite designs and craftsmanship of this quintessentially British interiors brand are admired worldwide. As part of our 25th-anniversary celebrations, GP & J Baker shares its remarkable story and reveals why it has chosen to be represented online by F&P Interiors for the past 16 years

We are honoured that GP & J Baker was awarded the Royal Warrant of Appointment to His Majesty King Charles III last year. This distinguished recognition marks 43 years since our first Royal Warrant, granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1982. It endorses GP & J Baker’s extraordinary heritage as a treasured and respected British interiors brand.

Founded in 1884 by the two enterprising Baker brothers, today the company remains as authentic, creative and innovative as it was then. We have a world-renowned archive of textiles dating back to the 1750s, which inspires our team of designers. We also look at decorating trends; how our customers are currently decorating for their clients to create comfortable and elegant interiors that are easy to live in. This combination influences our direction; we look backwards to enable us to move forwards.

Our design studio produces collections for GP & J Baker, Baker Lifestyle, Threads and Mulberry Home. We tend to launch two collections in the spring and two in the autumn, so the studio team is always working on collections many months, sometimes years ahead.

In the late 1800s, we had a division called the Oriental Rug Company and shipped rugs to companies such as Liberty London and ABC Carpet in New York. Using these archive designs as a starting point, we transformed these references into jute and cotton rugs.

We are known for working with the most talented designers and artists of the day. We have continued this tradition by spearheading some fun and interesting collaborations over the past few years. These include partnerships with H&M, Historic Royal Palaces, Ben Pentreath, Rita Konig and Kit Kemp. Collaborations are a fantastic way to bring a “freshness” to the business, allowing us to see our archive and products from a different perspective. The way these leading designers use our products inspires us.

Following the success of our first collaboration in 2018 with Historic Royal Palaces, our latest collaboration – entitled Royal Court – redefines timeless elegance. This iconic partnership introduces a stunning fabric and wallpaper collection for the contemporary home.

With exclusive access to the rich archives of Historic Royal Palaces, our design studio has crafted a collection that draws inspiration from the grandeur of their portfolio of properties: the lush gardens, chimneys and opulent interiors of Hampton Court Palace, the celebrated architecture of Kensington Palace and the Tower of London as well as enchanting details captured from the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection.

Over the past 10 years, designers have changed how they combine aesthetics. We have evolved from our traditional, classical look to something lighter. Designers now play with scale, using small prints on curtains and big prints on furniture. We call it the new modern-traditional, the way products are used together.

Looking forward, the challenge is working with craftspeople to transfer their skill sets to the next generation. The question is also how we use tools such as AI effectively to assist our business, while keeping traditions such as hand-block printing and embroidery alive.

We continually work at being environmentally aware. We are proud to have had our PlanetMark sustainability accreditation for the past three years.
