Delving into Lewis & Wood Wallpaper and Fabric Designs

1st May 2023

British brand, Lewis & Wood have cultivated a reputation for carefully crafted fabric and wallpaper designs. Launched in 1993, their curated ranges see half a dozen designs released annually.

These collections combine traditional motifs from across the globe using creative techniques. At the same time, British talent and manufacturing are key to their ethos. Melissa White, for example, has teamed-up with the company on more than one occasion. She began her career reproducing and hand-painting Elizabethan wall murals and uses this experience for both wallpaper and fabric. These approaches add an authenticity to patterns that make stunning additions to interiors.

Lewis & Wood began in a London basement by textile printer, Stephen Lewis, and London decorator, Joanna Wood. Creative Director, Magdalen Jebb, has since joined the team. Her creative working relationship with Stephen Lewis exudes their passion for the work.

Lewis & Wood have purposefully and admirably remained small and personal, they continue to have a singular showroom. They have now, however, taken another step forward by bringing their production in-house. In 2020 the development of their mill in Stroud, Gloucestershire is complete. They've grown the Lewis & Wood family whilst streamlining the process and making it their own.

This attitude has ensured Lewis & Wood's reputation as the darling of industry insiders. Luxurious excellence is seen, expected, and celebrated with every design.

"High quality, considered and concise."

There's Toile de Jouy and Indienne patterns, damask and woodland prints. Yet, they somehow draw these different styles and influences together through colour and character.

Lewis & Wood are also pioneers of wide-width wallpaper. This format offers a bigger canvas for larger designs, packed full of detail. This has allowed for more experimentation with brilliant results.

The brand has a clear vision that provides the basis for their unwavering consistency. This includes both their wallpaper and their fabric designs.

A Few of Our Favourites

This delicate floral design is based on a magnificent Arts & Crafts embroidery by William Morris' daughter, May Morris. The embroidered effect texture is particularly charming.

Each of the motifs in this stripe came from the background of a 17th century Indian wall hanging. It beautifully complements the Citadel print based on larger motifs from the same panel.

The colouring of this design - white outlines on a coloured ground - reflects the original 17th century Indian wall hanging from which each of the motifs were taken.

This abstract floral and treliis design is a reimagining of one of Lewis & Wood's classic linen prints. The original was created by Parisian textile designer Serge Maury.

A scenic pastoral spring day is depicted in wonderful detail on this linen curtain fabric. It uses the rural French style of Toile de Jouy to capture the British countryside.

A bestselling duck egg blue floral wallpaper, based on a 16th century paper-cut design, it has the appearance of block printed fabric and is ideal for using in high-traffic areas like hallways.

Based on engravings by Jean Baptiste Huet, this classic toile features two scenes of a joyful community village life with cattle, musicians and surrounding greenery. Matching fabric available.

An ever-popular painterly design showing the birds of peace as feathered friends. The beautiful imagery comes from a collaboration with Flora Roberts.
