Transforming a Neutral Home with Pattern and Personality

1 Oct 2025

Some of our customers have a clear interior design vision of what they want to achieve in their home, which was the case in this instance. Nathalie started with one order for a cloakroom sink skirt, which then led to us creating a whole host of bespoke items to adorn her neutral kitchen and larder, injecting pattern and personality. Nathalie ended up choosing four different, delicate floral fabrics and a striped fabric from three brands, having fully utilised the comprehensive search options on our website, as well as the sampling service, to make her selection of gorgeous fabrics that complement each other beautifully.

Then Jane, who has worked for us for more than 20 years making curtains, blinds and cushions, crafted the items according to the detailed instructions compiled by our made-to-measure team to ensure the perfect fit. These were particularly important for some of the more unusual bespoke pieces.

The result is that it has given her neutral kitchen, pantry and cloakroom added character, interest and warmth, with just the right amount of subtle pops of colour and pattern to create a cohesive, cosy, homely feel.

"Nathalie has a unique, distinct style and had a clear idea of what she wanted. She made good use of our user-friendly website and it was all smooth sailing. She started with an order for one item and it snowballed from there, with us making a cloakroom sink skirt, kitchen curtains, two relaxed blinds, a bench seat cushion, pantry fabric curtain and cupboard panels"

"I just fitted everything. The seat looks great, the cats love it, too, and the curtain for the pantry is perfect"

About the Design...

For the kitchen cupboard and larder panels, Nathalie chose a beautiful lightweight linen featuring narcissi in cream, Jean Monro's Bowness Fabric, which has a fine glaze. For the kitchen cupboard panels, Velcro was sewn onto the fabric and the opposing Velcro was provided for Nathalie to use a staple gun to attach to the window frame.

Another Jean Monro design, Nuts & Berries Fabric in hazelnut/blackcurrant, was used for the cloakroom sink skirt. The bigger, bolder pattern brings a pleasing softness and contrast to the dark mirror frames and toilet seat.

The delicate, small-scale floral pattern on the full-length, double pinch-pleat curtains is Nicholas Herbert's Bhavani. This quaint print features painterly floral sprigs in deep red and teal on a neutral ground, bringing that idyllic country-cottage vibe.

The gorgeous relaxed blinds are also created from a Nicholas Herbert design. Kaveri's natural linen look adds a touch of turquoise and burgundy to the scheme and is a great example of how mixing similar patterns can work together.

Finally, the comfortable and practical bench seat cushion features Ian Mankin's Jura in blue. Adding a stripe to florals is a classic, tried-and-tested design combination that is popular for good reason. Again, F&P's expertise and experience ensured the customer received exactly what they had in mind, the quote specifying foam with rounded edges and a slightly domed cushion pad, with the stripe railroaded (lengthwise) and a concealed zip.

The result of the different choices of patterns, quality fabric and craftsmanship is a scheme that will stand the test of time.
