A timeless classic, Toile de Jouy is ever popular for good reason. Beautifully suited to matchy-matchy, there are many more variations of these painterly prints available than you would imagine, not just the typical romantic pastoral scenes of French country life from a bygone era. Now, contemporary toile fabric experiments with bold colours clashing and Chinoiserie trends mean there is a pattern suitable for every style of home and interior. As one of the biggest stockist of Toile in the UK, we have chosen our favourites to inspire your next interior design project...
A Chinoiserie Toile de Jouy wallpaper design in navy and light blue on an off-white ground, featuring crane birds and temple motifs among tall, painterly plants and scenery. This style would add character to a bathroom or bedroom interior.
"I love this design, especially in the sapphire shade. The watercolour-feel, irregularity and scale of it appeals. From afar, it looks like one big design, but when you look closer, you can see the little scene created with the cranes around the pond and pagoda in the background. It works so well in a bathroom as it is a tranquil design, giving you something calming to look at while in the bath after a stressful day."

Based on engravings by Jean Baptiste Huet, this classic toile features two scenes of a joyful community village life with cattle, musicians and surrounding greenery. With dark crimson red detail on a cream ground, this design would suit a country house interior.
"I fell in love with this traditional design many years ago since the first time I stayed in a friend's Victorian attic guest bedroom, where this timeless pattern is used in abundance – from wall to ceiling, headboard, bedspread, cushions and curtains. Whenever I visit, I feel cocooned from the outside world despite being in central London."

A mythical style with animal and temple motifs in red, divided by feathered wavy stripes with entwining branches in emerald green. A playful, modern take on the classic design with use of bolder colour, yet still following the same rhythm as a traditional toile.
"I like this modern, exotic take on a toile, the stylised deer and temples. As is the case with most toile fabric, the longer you look at it, the more details you notice. As this toile also features long, wavy stripes, I think it would work well as long-length curtains paired with a matching red or green tasseled fringe trim."

Large design cream linen curtain fabric depicting autumnal bucolic tableau in ochres and browns. This wonderful design was commissioned from Andrew Davidson, wood engraver extraordinaire. Famous for many Royal Mail stamp collections and the pig engravings on Waitrose sausage packets, his skills have transferred beautifully to the discipline of pattern-making. What started out as a small wood engraving, featuring the spire of St Mary's, Tetbury, has been blown up to fill the width of wallpaper and fabric with an original English toile.
"I love this fabric from the gorgeous design house Lewis & Wood, the fact that it is a piece of art, capturing moments in a day in the English countryside, which I find calming. I also admire how it came to be made from a craftsman's engravings. I would use it on a large headboard, so you can see the intricate nature of Davidson's work in all its glory"

A classic Toile de Jouy blue-on-white hunting scene wallpaper.
"There are so many beautiful toile fabrics and wallpapers about, and it is a design that is constantly being updated with more colour and quirky patterns, but for me a true toile, such as the delightful La Chasse, is what it is all about. It has stood the test of time, it will never be out of fashion, whether you want that all-over look, walls and curtains or one or the other. And you can add some beautiful trimmings for an even more uniquely personal scheme."

A delightful contemporary toile de jouy of pastoral village life in dark khaki green on a neutral ground. This sweet design would create a timeless look in a hallway or kitchen.
"This modern take on the traditional toile de jouy design has an up-to-date feel with subtle Scandinavian influences. This folk-inspired design is a great choice for a child's room. When selecting fabrics for children's bedrooms, we often consider how it will work as the child grows, and this fabric strikes the perfect balance of being both timeless and modern."
