Being commissioned to transform a period property's family living room is a wonderful opportunity, especially when the space is as grand and full of character as this one. The F&P Interiors design team approached the project with creativity and expertise, ensuring every detail reflected the room's timeless elegance.

The living room, pictured before work began above, had not been decorated since the client moved in 12 years previously. Once F&P Interiors' personalised design scheme was implemented, the transformation was a complete success. The unique result fulfils the brief by bringing flow to the room, adding colour within a cohesive, vibrant but relaxed scheme, as well as enhancing the previously dominating fireplace.
"It now feels exactly how I wanted it to be. The blue walls have provided the perfect backdrop for all the reds, pinks and plum colours that I love. Thanks go to @fandpinteriors – who had so many brilliant ideas and shared such gorgeous fabrics and trim samples – for all their help pulling this together (not an ad – just a fan!)" Sam
An online consultation is the first stage of the process to bring to life Sam's vision of her dream front room. This is when a designer gathers all the information needed to start work, from finding out about the client's likes and dislikes in regard to every little detail from colour and style to ambience.
Having a stunning, large Victorian room to play with is exciting, but it brings with it as many challenges as it does period features. Not only do all the furniture proportions need to be in balance, but also the layout is crucial for it to function for its intended use. Placing the sofas opposite each other and moving the TV to the wall opposite the fireplace was the first impactful layout change. The result is an inviting space to entertain guests, with additional seating provided by the two F&P Fawley Chairs. At the same time, this furniture arrangement works equally well for the family to snuggle up on the sofas, put their feet up and watch telly in a cosy environment, despite the enormous scale of the room and ceiling height.
This intimate feel was achieved by colour drenching – painting a room from top to bottom, including skirting boards, radiators, ceiling and, in this instance, the fireplace, in one colour. Not only does it have a dramatic overall effect, but also it has metamorphosed the domineering fireplace into the beautiful, delicate feature, resolving an issue the client wanted addressed.
Our designers then used their extensive knowledge of fabrics and mixing-and-matching of patterns to provide colour. The gorgeous bespoke F&P Interiors ottoman, upholstered in a stunning choice of Pienza fabric, complements the existing sofas. The rug was also sourced by us. In addition to the 18,000 products listed on our website, the design team is not constrained by this. They use their expertise to find the right product for each design scheme, searching far and wide to ensure every detail harmonises, including in our extended library.
This is what gives the room its refined elegance. It's all in the finishing touches, the matching red velvet piping on the chairs, the carefully chosen made-to-measure cushions with their exquisite trimmings as well as the magnificent tassels adorning the curtains. As Leanardo da Vinci famously said, "Details make perfection."
It may be a small design feature, but adding fabric trimmings can elevate a room from ordinary to extraordinary. This style guide explains the different types of trimmings and how to use them to the best effect.
