Coffee With... Coordonne Creative Director Conce Fiol

23rd April 2019

Coordonne wallpaper sees artistic, vivid and exciting contemporary designs. Their wonderful scenery murals, geometric patterns, and feature wall panels are endlessly inspiring.

They launched in 1978 and are now celebrating over 40 years in the industry, that includes a very special collection. To mark the occasion we caught up with their Creative Director, Conce Fiol.

Coordonne 40th Anniversary

We love the 40th Anniversary collection of 40 artists, one for each year since Coordonne was founded! Whose idea was it to put the collection together and how hard was it working with so many creatives?

At Coordonnné we are constantly looking for artists to develop our collections. For many years now, Coordonné has relied on the technique and vision of other artists to develop our concepts and our vision of the world. The 40th Anniversary collection emerged to use this ethos and celebrate the 40 years of the brand! Once we completed the collection we rejoiced for the cast of artists who had signed up for this adventure with us.

The development of the 40th Anniversary collection has been hard but absolutely rewarding. I have felt very fortunate to be able to work with such great artists and to have shared with them this journey. No doubt this is one of the most beautiful projects I will do in my professional career.

Your creation Kintsugi is a prominent design in the collection, can you talk us through how the artwork was created?

Kintsugi is the result of a mixture of my interests, experience and happenstance. With this design I wanted to combine the impression that the world of wallpaper has had on me since I joined Coordonné. It's personal style and what moves me most: art.

I found it amusing to speak through a classic of wallpaper, as is the floral, but with a different discourse and technique. I have always been very curious about the Eastern world, both culturally and artistically. I wanted to talk about what the Kintsugi means and the distance between Eastern and Western representations. In Japan, the passage of time, experience, and scar are valued as marks of what has been lived.

Thus came this comparison between the western beauty of the sculptural, the polished and the immaculate and the oriental, which values wrinkle and scar, wisdom and experience. To develop the design was very simple! I waited for the flowers that were so beautiful in their freshness to dry up and lose value, anyone would have thrown them away! And with them I made these two opposite versions; the sculptural-Western (white) and the repaired-oriental (gold).

Coordonne Wallpaper Designs

It’s clear to see that Coordonne have a passion for pattern - was there a specific design that first introduced you to the brand?

When I first met Coordonnné, I barely knew anything about the world of wallpaper. I was surprised to see the co-existence between classical designs and more abstract or photographic ones. I think the designs that I fell most in love with were those of the Tiles or Essentia collections. I thought it was a brilliant idea to work on the format of the floor and project it onto the walls of people’s homes.

We were delighted to see so many wall murals featuring in the Coordonne collections. Why do you feel this is the way forward for modern wallpaper production?

I think that with wallpaper, barriers are breaking down day by day. Now paper is a trend, it is replacing painting or, at the very least, they live together in the same space. People have been quick to consider their possibilities and integrate them into the decoration of their homes.

The mural is a wonderful initiative to reinvent the concept of fresco. Hearing of frescoes sounds classic, bourgeois, we seem to be talking about a palace! With the printing of complete images in large formats (such as the wall) it opens up an infinite world of possibilities. After these reflections, we launched the Random Chinoiseries collection, the purpose being that everyone can have a fresco in their house - be it an apartment, a studio or a palace!

Who are your main artistic influences?

Many! So many that it would never end! But I would highlight Irving Penn, who was the photographer who initiated me into the world of art and fashion. Then Rothko, Kandinsky, and Serra because with them I understood better the relationship between architecture, space and art. And of course, to Martin Margiela, because I am heartbroken by the world he created and the language of each of his pieces.
