Cardrona Valley, Near Queenstown, New Zealand
With a family group spanning three generations, our 2 hour horse trek across the Cardrona valley was the perfect mixed-ability activity that the whole family enjoyed. Situated just 45 minutes from Queenstown, this ski-resort by Winter and mountain playground by Spring is located in the heart of the Southern Alps on the south island.
A lovely herd of trekking horses were ready and waiting for us as we arrived, where we were all individually suited and booted by the team. Handpicked for their kind and gentle temperaments, the staff meticulously matched us to our horses based on our age, height and horse riding experience. For those first timers and those less confident, added comforts such as luxury saddles and monkey straps were fitted for extra stability throughout the ride.
Before we set off, we each had a quick one-on-one riding lesson to ensure everyone knew how to steer and stop, although their horses are so well trained that you adopt a ‘loose rein’ style of riding and simply sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery! With the stables set at the base of the hillside, we began the climb which soon gave way to spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and across the working Merino sheep farm lands. Along the trek, there are plenty of photo opportunities and for those looking for something a little bit exhilarating, break-away treks can be arranged to meet back with the group for the home. Overall this is a fantastic beginners ride but also great for mixed-ability groups.

Viñales UNESCO Valley, Cuba
Vinales Valley is a national park in Cuba and incredibly beautiful with lush hills perfect for trekking on horseback. We asked our hosts to book us a ride up into the hills, we were four adults with varying abilities, the ponies we were given were quite small, which was ideal for us females but the men did look a little precarious on theirs, however these ponies were very patient with us all. You are trekking on narrow tracks through farm land where you can see the oxen ploughing the rust-coloured soil ready to sew tobacco, and then up into the hills stopping to admire the breath taking views, on the way down we happened upon a shack serving delicious mojitos! The ponies were keen to get home so the last leg of our journey was done at pace!

Jurassic Polo Club, South Africa
Nestled in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, Jurassic Polo is run by professional South African 5 goal player Selby Williamson. The club is in the most beautiful setting, surrounded by mountains with a lush green pitch beckoning for some action, just be careful you don’t bump into a zebra! Days are taken up with lessons, stick n ball and chukkas, with an afternoon off for a hack through the wilderness to see the local wildlife, finishing with sundowners at a viewpoint to die for.

Multi-day treks from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Horses are central to life in Mongolia and riding them throughout this vast country is just as much a cultural experience as an equine one. The Mongol horse is alleged to be largely unchanged since the time of Genghis Khan, and the pride they feel for this breed and expertise in horse riding is something that is shared by every Mongolian I met. Leaving Ulaanbaatar, we drove East out of the city, marvelling at the scenes unfolding outside the window as the urban landscape quickly fell away to reveal breath-taking natural scenery beyond. Traditional Mongolian yurts pepper the hillsides and very quickly cars and trucks are replaced by individuals riding horseback along sandy tracks.
Horse riding tours start just outside the city and can be arranged to accommodate all levels. However multi-day treks are for those more experienced riders as the terrane you tackle and the remoteness you achieve is relatively inaccessible by vehicles, so a good riding ability is required. I have never visited such a warm and welcoming country where hospitality is second nature to all that live there, and this is felt ever more so when turning up to a yurt for the night on horseback. Along with the most spectacular landscapes and untamed nature that this East Asian country retains, Mongolia is certainly the dream location for riders looking for a sense of adventure in an uncultivated setting.

Wadi Rum, Jordan
Setting foot in the wadi rum is like landing on Mars, thanks to the red sand and sand stone mountains and horse riding through this epic landscape is the best way to explore it.
Not for the faint hearted these ponies may be small but don’t let that fool you! They are bred for their endurance and only a steep sand dune will stop your stead when you start galloping. Two guides come with each group, one on horseback and one in a jeep to set up lunch and camp each evening. Sleeping under the night sky, with the Bedouin guide cooking traditional feasts, and teaching you about the stars makes this an adventure not to be missed.
