Introducing...17 PATTERNS11th July 2016
We are very excited to introduce London-based design house, 17 Patterns, and their 'Debut' Collection of stunningly original wallpapers.
Deriving its name from the mathematical classification of a two-dimensional repetitive pattern, first proven by Evgraf Fedorov in 1891, 17 Patterns curate, manipulate and restructure specially-commissioned artworks into dynamic repeat designs in collaboration with the artists. The original concept of the artists’ work is evolved through a variety of imaginative, unconventional techniques and creative processes. Colourways and textures are chosen under guidance of a trusted team of interiors, fabric and colour experts to ensure usability.
The company was founded in 2014 by art director & designer, Nosca Inc, who draws inspiration from past and present design disciplines, delivering a highly original display of pattern and colour. Artworks and designs are taken on a creative journey driven by experimentation and innovation, injecting bold and exciting ideas into 21st century interiors.
All of 17 Patterns’ wallpaper products are printed and manufactured in the UK using ethically-sourced papers.
The Debut Wallpaper Collection
17 Patterns first wallpaper collection comprises eight beautiful and varied designs, six of which were created in collaboration with British graffiti artist, Paris and London based/Athens-born illustrator and screen printer, Christina K.
Reminiscent of the traditional weaving pattern found in twill fabric, Brushed Herringbone began as a unique hand-painted artwork. Meticulously manipulated with modern digital design techniques, the design by 17 Patterns and Athens-born illustrator, artist and textile designer, Christina K, is both vibrant and sumptuous. Its large V-shaped pattern and zigzag formation beautifully intertwine, creating subtle, textured gradients across delicately-coloured brushstrokes. Offering a truly decadent interior statement, this sophisticated and opulent design is available in subtle shades including: grey on luxurious metallic white mica; harmonious pink and blue; rich navy blue, and contemporary monotone black on non-woven paper stock.
The sublime, 21st century Cloudbusting wallpaper is British contemporary artist, Paris, and east London designer, Nosca Inc’s, debut collaboration for 17 Patterns. The dynamic pair introduce harmonious moods into your interior with a beautiful aesthetic of clouds forming over a metallic backdrop. Delivered in a swirling mist of grey, peach, blue and marsala, this alluring mica collection displays subtle textures and painting strokes that are organic yet constrained by the repeat of the pattern. Using unconventional techniques, the original painting was exposed to all of nature’s elements and weathered naturally in the English countryside to enhance movement and texture within the watercolours. The result is a truly sophisticated and opulent wallpaper.
17 Patterns and British designer, Nosca Inc’s, Spiral Chaos delivers a stunning visual interpretation of the designer’s chaotic yet harmonious thoughts. Depth and intrigue seamlessly spiral throughout this tranquil utopia with introspective portals, delicate nebulous textures, and sumptuous, smoky mists. This one-of-a-kind geometric pattern displays originality across four colour palettes: peach; blue; jade; and black. This self-portrait of the artist’s mind introduces calming properties and a mood-enhancing backdrop into any 21st century interior.
17 Patterns and British designer, Nosca Inc, deliver an on-trend interpretation of the geometric art form, Dazzle. During World War I, Dazzle camouflage was painted onto military ships to make it difficult for enemy fire to estimate a target’s range, direction and speed. Dazzle art has since inspired both global fashion and graphic design industries alike. The 17 Patterns Dazzle collection features compellingly-dynamic shapes which interrupt and intersect each other in four contrasting monotone colours palettes. Our black and charcoal editions subtly juxtapose textured decay with bold graphics for a more traditional take on this bold and timeless pattern.
Delivering a colony of artistic styles, 17 Patterns’ Flamingo wallpaper presents a fresh yet traditional interpretation of one of nature’s most inspiring birds. British Art Director Nosca Inc’s masterful curation beautifully accents the carefully crafted pencil work of Athens-born illustrator, Christina K. Swapping the mudflats of Africa for the ink pools of east London, Nosca Inc gently bathes the famously ‘pink’ flamingos in a tarn of pastel hues and soft grey undertones.
To enable Nosca Inc’s creative thoughts to take flight, respected British graffiti artist Paris joins the flock to juxtapose textural featherings and paint drips against the regal beauty of Christina K’s visually stimulating composition. 17 Patterns’ Flamingo wallpaper is printed in the UK on ethically sourced fibrous paper which has been carefully selected to heighten the wallpaper’s textural characteristic and flamboyant artistry.
Inspired by woodland walks with his family in Somerset, contemporary artist, Paris, represents nature’s treasure trove with this stunning watercolour interpretation of British wild mushrooms. Exploring the mysteries of the earth, ancient Britain, standing stones, ley lines, the equinox and solstice, Paris and 17 Patterns have produced a collection of vibrant organic wallpapers available across large (coming soon), medium and small scales. The Forager collection delivers the beauty of the English countryside into your home. This delightfully zany print is available on luxurious metallic white mica, contemporary non-woven grey, and for a psychedelic twist, fluorescent ‘magic’ mushrooms are presented in multi colours on black non-woven papers.
Submerge yourself in the tranquil underwater world of 17 Patterns’ Jellyfish collection. Working in collaboration with Athens-born illustrator, artist and textile designer, Christina K, 17 Patterns delivers a beautifully-illustrated pattern of marine life with a delicate narrative. Inspired by Christina’s hedonistic love of visual sensations, this aquatic paradise features electric jellyfish with trailing tentacles submerged in an oceanic current of coral reefs and sea anemones. These natural wonders of the world are available in four soothing colourways (ivory, grey, navy and black) which are stunningly brought to life with vibrant flourishes of colours such as electric blue, pink, peach and green on high quality non-woven paper stock. This collection introduces a modern yet traditional backdrop to any interior.
Derived from a large format free-form watercolour painting by British artist, Paris, 17 Patterns’ collaborative Whirling Dervish wallpaper showcases the contemporary artist’s striking abstract painting style. Lucid, sinuous lines in both fluorescent and monotone palettes exhibit a hybrid style of Venetian grandeur fused with urban painting aesthetics. Available in 210m to 420m formats, this timeless panelled wallpaper collection is offered in four exciting colourways, from cinematic black & white to lustrous pink.
About the artists
British designer, Nosca Inc is based in east London and sits at the forefront of interior art direction. Nosca champions the curation of non-conformist artists whose ideals do not fit into the gallery or agency representation mould. His diverse (and often confidential) artist services are an underground entity endorsed purely by word-of-mouth referral. He has curated major London shows for renowned, subversive artists which have featured on national TV news. He crossed over into the world of interior design in 2010, providing design, art direction and installation advisory services for interior designers. Take a look at our Coffee With...Nosca feature.
Christina K is a London based/Athens-born illustrator, textile designer, screen printer and film producer who works with a blend of traditional and digital techniques. The melange of influences which ignite the creative inspiration behind Christina K’s work have little common ground other than an obvious energy and a bias towards the hedonistic love of visual sensation. Her illustrations have been championed by international record labels, magazines, fashion houses and TV companies that have the openness to be visually stimulating.
Paris started painting in 1987, but it was in 1994, when he relocated to the south of England, that he became instrumental in the renaissance of the Bristol graffiti scene. For 20 years, Paris’ hand-crafted letter forms and abstract painting style have been applauded globally. Synonymous with breaking new ground, his art attracts high profile commissions. In 2011/12, he was the artist-in-residence for British band, Coldplay, producing the artwork for their 5th album and international tour, Mylo Xyloto; he has also produced album artwork for the Rolling Stones, Robbie Williams, and Ed Sheeran, to name a few.
Paris moved to Somerset in 2013 were he began exploring the local countryside and ancient forests. It was here that he started to experiment with watercolours; painting wild mushrooms and abstract interpretations of nature, and his epic graffiti fill-ins now enrich and inform the textures and shapes of his new more natural and sublime forms.
