Fabrics

What is a Pattern Repeat?

A pattern repeat measurement is the point in a fabrics’ pattern at which that same point in that pattern is repeated.

A half drop repeat means that the pattern starts to repeat half way down the fabrics length. This allows for more variation across the design. Depending on your required length, you will have to stagger how you attach the fabric to ensure that the pattern matches.

What is  rub test?

Many fabrics will have a rub test or a Martindale Test. This process involves the fabric being mechanically rubbed until the point at which it begins to break.

As a rough guide, typically a fabric with over 30,000 rubs will be suitable for contract use. However, as this is not always the case, you can use the ‘Fabric Usage’ filter to find fabrics that are suitable.

If you have any doubts, please contact us and we can advise you further.

How do I measure for curtains?

Have a look at our helpful guide to measuring for curtains for a simple step by step guide for taking your measurements at home.

Our handy online measuring guides also include instructions for blinds, furniture, headboards and wallpaper.

If you have any questions or are unsure about a particular fabric, please contact us and we can advise you.

I need to replace an existing fabric, can you help?

There are many classic designs that are printed over and over again so it is possible that the fabric is still around.

If we find that the fabric has been discontinued, we will always offer you some alternative suggestions.

Can you supply fabrics that are not on your website?

The most important thing to consider is the condition of your walls. The better the condition, the more options you have.

Why do I need interlining?

Interlining is an extra layer of fabric tucked in between the face curtain fabric and the lining.  Using an interlining gives the curtains a fuller look and has the added benefit of improving the thermal quality of the curtains - especially useful for draughty windows or doors.

What is black out lining?

Black Out Lining (also known as block out) is a treated lining fabric that blocks light, perfect for use in bedrooms where a regular lining fabric would allow light through. The black out lining is sewn into the reverse side of the curtain or blind. The colour of this lining isn’t black - it’s white or ivory.

What is a “return”?

The return is the distance from the end of the curtain to the wall - you can have poles or tracks with returns so that there is minimal light seepage on the sides or an eyelet hook on the wall that the last curtain hook is fixed to.

What is an overlap?

We will add on approx 5cms each leading edge so that the curtains slightly overlap in the middle.  Useful to prevent light or draught seepage.

What do I need to provide an installation measurement?

To adhere to child safety industry regulations (BS EN 13120), we must ensure that a blind chain has sufficient clearance from the floor.

What is the difference between Outside or Inside Recess?

Take a look at our blinds measuring guide which explains how you should measure for outside or inside the window recess.

What is the difference between a roman blind with a cord and cleat and a roman blind on a track?

We produce roman blinds ready-mounted on a track (or rail) with a chain operation on one side.  Alternatively, we can make a more traditional roman blind with a timber batton at the top, operated by a cord with a cleat hook that is fixed to the wall.  The majority of our customers opt for the chain operated track version.

What is the difference between fixed-to-wall and fixed-to-bed?

A headboard that is fixed to the wall will be delivered with a timber batten that requires fixing to the wall behind the bed.  A corresponding batten is pre-fixed to the back of the headboard and the two need to be slotted together. Instructions are included upon delivery.

A headboard that can be fixed to the bed is delivered with timber struts that slot over the pegs located at the back of the bed divan base.

What is a pillow-stop?

This is a non-padded section of the headboard that sits behind the mattress underneath the main padded section of the headboard.  Most of the pillow-stop is hidden from view once the headboard is in position.

What sizes of headboards are available?

All our headboards are custom-made, please see our measuring guide for headboards to ensure you send us the necessary dimensions to make up a quote.
